New York state has approved $1.5 million to start the first ADU program in the North Country.
TICONDEROGA, N.Y. —
Two organizations in Essex County have been awarded $1.5 million for the first accessory dwelling unit program in the North Country. The North Country Rural Development Coalition and the Essex County Land Bank made the announcement Monday.
The funding came from New York’s Plus One ADU program to support the creation of ADUs. The self-contained residential units are typically located on the same property as a single-family home. They are more commonly known as in-law apartments or garage conversions.
The investment marks a significant milestone for rural communities in northern New York, with an opportunity to provide affordable housing options for the workforce, as well as income opportunities for homeowners.
The timeline for applications and project updates has yet to be announced.
